Dementia Action Week 2025 is here, and at BallyCara, we're proud to stand with Dementia Australia in raising awareness and fostering a more compassionate community.
This year's theme, "Nobody Can Do It Alone", truly resonates with our core philosophy. It's a powerful reminder that the journey with dementia is not a solitary one. For older Australians, this message holds a special significance. While dementia is not a normal part of ageing, we know that it's a reality for many of us, or someone we love and its impact extends far beyond the person with the diagnosis. But with a little understanding and compassion, we can all make a significant difference.
With an estimated 433,000 Australians living with dementia in 2025, and that number projected to almost double by 2058, it's a health challenge that touches our entire community. It's the leading cause of death for Australian women and the second for all Australians over 65, making it a conversation we cannot afford to shy away from.
At BallyCara, we understand that supporting someone with dementia involves a network of care - from family and friends to dedicated health professionals and a welcoming community. We are committed to providing a supportive environment where people can continue to live well with dignity and purpose.
This Dementia Action Week, we want to shine a light on the simple, yet profound, actions that make a difference. It can be as small as a neighbour patiently repeating a conversation, a friend helping with a shopping list, or a community group offering inclusive activities. These seemingly small gestures can help someone maintain their independence, feel valued, and stay connected. When woven together, they form a strong and supportive safety net.
We believe in a holistic, wellness-based approach to care. Our in-home services and aged care facilities are designed to support not just the physical needs of those living with dementia, but their mental and emotional well-being, too. From our tailored wellness programs to our dementia-friendly design principles, we aim to empower our residents and clients to live as independently and happily as possible.
This year's theme is also a crucial message for those who are supporting a loved one with dementia: you don't have to do it alone, either. It's essential to look after your own well-being. Don't hesitate to reach out for help from friends, family, or support services. Organisations like Dementia Australia offer a range of resources, including the National Dementia Helpline (1800 100 500), which provides free and confidential advice 24/7. They also have peer support groups, counselling, and free educational sessions specifically for carers.
This week, and every week, let's commit to being more understanding, patient, and connected. By sharing our stories and offering a helping hand, we can build a dementia-friendly Australia where no one has to face this journey alone. Let's work together to create a future where every person feels valued, respected, and part of a community that truly cares.
