After the Storm: Cleaning Up and Rebuilding in South East Queensland

After the Storm: Cleaning Up and Rebuilding in South East Queensland

South-East Queenslanders are no strangers to wild weather. From torrential downpours to destructive hailstorms, we know how quickly paradise can turn into a clean-up operation.

After an unprecedented weather event in Tropical Cyclone Alfred affecting South-East Queensland and Northern New South Wales this past week, the clean-up begins.

But first we must recognise the amazing efforts of all our BallyCara Staff who went above and beyond to ensure our Residents and Clients were prepared, safe and secure. And confirming Staff themselves were also ready for the unknown, and at times, unpredictable, weather situation we found ourselves in.

We had a small team stay onsite for two nights at our Scarborough location to maintain the care for our Village and Residential Residents; and be on hand if an evacuation had been required. Whilst our Home Care and Wellness teams were busy checking on Clients, especially those who live in the most vulnerable areas to flooding etc.

Now we are in full swing of inspecting the sites in the impacted locations, clearing debris, confirming they are safe and free from hazards for Residents, Clients, and Staff to enjoy again.

Read on for some tips on navigating the daunting task of cleaning up and rebuilding after extreme weather events.

Safety First: Assessing the Damage

Before you even think about picking up a broom, prioritise your safety. Electrical hazards, structural damage, and contaminated water pose significant risk.

  • Electricity and Gas: Contact Energex or your gas provider immediately if you suspect damage to lines or meters. Do not attempt to fix these yourself.
  • Structural Integrity: Check for leaning walls, cracked foundations, and damaged roofs. If you're unsure, consult a qualified builder or engineer.
  • Contaminated Water: Floodwaters can carry harmful bacteria and chemicals. Wear protective clothing, including gloves and closed-toe shoes. Avoid wading through floodwaters if possible.
  • Snakes and other Wildlife: Displaced wildlife, including snakes, may be seeking shelter in your property. Be cautious and contact a professional if necessary.

Documenting the Damage: Essential for Insurance Claims

Thorough documentation is crucial for your insurance claims.

  • Take photos and videos: Capture the extent of the damage before you start cleaning. Include photos of damaged possessions, structural issues, and watermarks.
  • Keep records: Maintain a detailed list of damaged items, including descriptions, purchase dates, and estimated values.
  • Contact your Insurer: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible and follow their instructions on how to claim.

The Clean-up: Step-by-Step Guide

Once you've assessed the damage and documented everything, it's time to start cleaning.

1. Remove any debris including fallen branches and mud from your property. Local councils often provide designated collection points for storm debris as part of their disaster recovery. Check your council website for details - Moreton Bay, Brisbane City, Logan, Gold Coast.

2. If your property has been flooded, use a pump to remove standing water. Be mindful of electrcical hazards.

3. Ventilate and dry the property by opening windows and doors. Using fans and dehumidifiers (or your air-con on dry mode), can help to speed up the drying process. Mould can develop quickly in damp environments.

4. Wash down all surfaces with a disinfectant solution paying particular attention to areas that have come into contact with floodwater.

5. Dispose of damaged items by separating into categories of salvageable, unsalvageable, and hazardous waste. Local councils usually provide an extra kerbside pick up for these items as part of their disaster recovery. Check your council website for proper disposal methods.

Seeking Support: Resources for Queenslanders

Recovering from a natural disaster can be overwhelming! Don't hesitate to seek support from family, friends, and your health providers.
If you are struggling with the emotional impacts contact an organisation like Lifeline on 13 11 14.
Depending on the extent of damage each level of Government may provide financial assistance including grants, support for loss of income, waste disposal, community support, and recovery programs.
If you would like to volunteer to be a part of the wider clean-up efforts contact your local community groups or Volunteering Queensland to offer your assistance.

Looking Ahead: Building Resilience

Natural disasters are a part of life in South-East Queensland. By taking proactive steps to prepare and recover, we can build resilience and protect our communities.

  • Prepare an Emergency Kit including essential items such as water, non-perishable food, first-aid supplies, and a battery-powered radio.
  • Develop an Emergency Plan by discussing what to do in the event of a natural disaster and practice your plan regularly.
  • Stay informed by monitoring weather forecasts and heed warnings from official sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology.
  • Support your community by checking on your neighbours and offer assistance to those in need.

Cleaning up after a natural disaster is a challenging process, but by working together, we can rebuild our communities and emerge stronger than before. Stay safe, stay informed, and remember that help is available. If you have any queries related to your BallyCara services please reach our to your contact within BallyCara or call 1300 272 222.
