Seniors' Month activities in Queensland and Victoria begin with the International Day of Older People on the 1st of October each year.
On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish October 1st as the International Day of Older People.
It is an integral part of the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030) and is a global collaboration, with the aim of improving the lives of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live.
Older people play an integral part in strengthening our communities and neighbourhoods; as workers, carers, volunteers… the list could go on. They are community connectors, and many are activists. These contributions are often overlooked, influenced by ageism and other societal thoughts/beliefs and behaviours. Older people are an asset to our communities. They contribute to the economy, assume leadership roles, contribute skills and expertise in so many unique ways. They care for others and many live active and fulfilling lives.
Research tells us:
- The world is getting much older
- Longevity is becoming commonplace
- Happiness increases in old age
Within BallyCara our ‘why’ is “Inspiring Healthy and Happy Living”. We lead with a wellness approach so that the older people who choose to engage our services and with whom we have the privilege of working alongside can achieve the outcomes that are important to them. We continue to strengthen the support and care we provide in the services we offer and the communities where we operate.
At BallyCara we wish to celebrate older people living healthier and longer lives, enable voice, choice and control, and to work alongside people to help them achieve the lives they wish to live.
Age doesn’t define who the person is – we long to see people thriving across the generations, ageing with dignity.
There will be many events during Seniors Month across Australia and indeed globally which will highlight the immense contribution of Older People. However, much still needs to be achieved.
Happy International Day of Older People.
Thank you for letting us be part of your journey.
