June 15th, marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2025, and this year's theme, "Beyond Age", resonates deeply with BallyCara's foundational philosophy of inspiring healthy and happy living across generations.
At BallyCara, we believe that age is a tapestry woven with unique experiences, wisdom, and continued potential. It should never be a
barrier to safety, dignity, and respect.
Elder abuse, in all its insidious forms - be it psychological, financial, physical, sexual, or neglect - is a deeply troubling issue that often remains hidden. The statistics paint a concerning picture: one in six older Australians experience elder abuse in a given year, and tragically, almost two-thirds of those affected do not seek help. This means that right here in our communities, cherished elders may be suffering in silence, often at the hands of those they trust most, such as family members. This reality is a stark reminder that we all have a vital role to play in safeguarding the rights and well-being of older people.
The "Beyond Age" theme implores us to look past stereotypes and ageist attitudes that can inadvertently create environments where elder abuse can flourish. Ageism, the prejudice or discrimination against individuals or groups on the basis of their age, is a pervasive issue that undermines the value and contributions of older people. When we dismiss or diminish older individuals based on their age, we chip away at their sense of worth and can make them more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. At BallyCara, our SONA® philosophy (Gaelic for Happiness) actively challenges this, placing the individual's well-being and happiness at the heart of all we do, irrespective of their age or perceived limitations. We focus on strengths and abilities, fostering an environment where everyone matters.
For us, "Beyond Age" means recognising that every older person has a right to live a life free from fear, manipulation, and harm. It means understanding that capabilities and desires evolve, but the fundamental right to autonomy and self-determination remains constant. It means fostering strong, respectful relationships built on trust and open communication, not just within families, but within our broader communities.
How can we, as individuals and as an aged care organisation, move "Beyond Age" to prevent elder abuse?
Firstly, we must educate ourselves and others to recognise the subtle and overt signs of elder abuse. These can range from unexplained injuries or financial irregularities to social isolation and changes in behaviour like anxiety or withdrawal.
Secondly, we must foster open conversations about ageing and the rights of older people. By normalising discussions around future planning, financial management, and care preferences, we empower older individuals and their families to establish clear boundaries and expectations, reducing vulnerabilities.
Thirdly, we must build stronger community connections. Isolation is a significant risk factor for elder abuse. At BallyCara, we champion community engagement, encouraging our Residents and Clients to remain active, connected, and supported. Our "Village of Friends", Wellness Classes and Invigorate Group are designed to create a vibrant social fabric where individuals feel valued, seen, and heard.
Finally, we must advocate for systemic change and ensure robust systems are in place. This includes accessible reporting mechanisms, legal assistance, and counselling services for both victims and, where appropriate, perpetrators.
At BallyCara, we are committed to being a beacon of support and safety. We strive to create environments where older people thrive, where their voices are heard, and where their rights are fiercely protected.
This World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let us all look "Beyond Age" and unite to ensure that every older Australian can live a healthy, happy, and abuse-free life.
